Background

A working life in community development

Gabi Benedek is a community developer, an organizational developer and a project leader, and an expert in social development. The work is with municipal and small communities, community leaders, citizens' groups and NGOs: consultancy, evaluation and development, training, community conflict management and research.

Gabi was introduced to the idea of community foundations in 2009. These are independent, community-led institutions that support local initiatives from local resources. Gabi has been part of the Community Foundation Support Programme and the Roots and Wings Foundation (Gyökerek és Szárnyak Alapítvány) team from the very beginning, as a staff member and as a member of the Board of Trustees. The foundation lists Gabi today as Trustee, Development & Consultancy.

Gabi is also a member, an office holder and a member of the supervisory board of the Hungarian Association of Community Development, and appears on the team of Foresee, whose work includes mediation, conflict management and restorative justice.

In Gabi's words

What the work rests on

Gabi names the foundations of that practice plainly: solidarity, community and participation as core values, together with respect for change and acceptance of its unpredictability.

In my work, I seek opportunities for useful yet joyful action and co-creation…
Gabriella Benedek

Gabi's profile on Foresee's site is a short essay about communities divided by an election. It argues that they need restorative steps to heal, and that the "circle model" used in restorative methods can help the sides see themselves again as one interconnected network.

The studio

Why a studio for family memory

Heritage Journey Studio works slowly and personally. We listen, we research the wider history that shaped your family, and we help you turn remembering into something you can hold and pass on: a book, a journey, a gift. Our focus is Hungarian and Central European roots.

The narrator sets the pace, and the family reads and corrects every chapter before anything is printed. Community, participation, co-creation: the values Gabi names are the ones a family memoir needs, because the story belongs to the family, and the family helps shape every page of it.
